As early as 1997, Terre Thaemlitz (transgender multimedia producer) questioned the subversive quality of electronic music and of transgender surgery, both of which use the latest technological tools as a means of representation and, consequently, often end up perverting them and reinforcing stereotypes. ( Couture Cosmetique) The same means, moreover, help to deconstruct the processes of creation and of representation and make it possible to explore their interstices, those of genre (whether of sex or music) (Interstices 2000). This deconstruction, and the consciousness or the occupation of these interstices, also allows the representation of tensions and contradictions which arise both from the desire and the resistance towards occupying the musical stage or gender, both defined up until now in subjugation to and perpetuation of dominant patriarchal socio-economic systems.
We accept that sexual/gendered bodies are historical sites of political, cultural, scientific and technological renegociation; the same applies to the electronic media, the musical stage. As Anna Friz (sound and pirate radio artist) wrote in 2004 (Heard but Unscene; women in electronic music), although one may be fed up with identity debates, the coming of new hardware and software does not erase questions of access, economics and representation. According to her, the very discourse on liberalization of the means of production and of creation, limits and stigmatises the discourse on representation and access to the stage.
If electronic music, and the raise of technology in general, could be thought up and used to call into question the structures at the time of the celebration of the rhizomes and other networked societies, the laptop gender, digital creation, alternative rock scene have become conventions unto themselves, the aesthetics of which are often normalised, enclosed by the very formats and aesthetics of the software or the performance itself. And yet technology allows transparency, transmission and highjacking of the code, of other forms of distribution, and of the relation to creation, to ownership, to the author, to the public …
Recently, various cultural spaces and music festivals in Barcelona and in Spain hosted debates and workshops on the meeting ground of digital, musical and feminist practices. In 2003, the Santa Monica Centre invited Christiane Erharter’s project “XX01/2003 Infotainment” on women’s representation and its place in the history of popular and punk music of the 20th century.
Today the Santa Monica Centre, continuing to feature a range of stories and experiences, has invited Constant, an art and media association run by artists active in gender issues, networks, open source, recycled technology, working conditions, etc, and which develops projects in different spaces such as the field of code and standards/norms of the digital medium, to make a presentation. The project QUÉ C*** ? will explore various strategies of production, of creation, of curating, of performances, of representation, by organising public, open and streamed interviews, debates, meetings, an information room and a party, on the following questions, among others:
-What is it about the theoretical undercurrents and the networking mechanisms in the music scene(s) that impede women artists from being seen and heard? Is this question still relevant?
-Has the alternative scene become a standard as a result of the formats of dominant technologies and the reproduction of stereotypes? Or does it remain a place of possible détournement / displacement, and a place of experimentation in technologies or gender stereotypes ?
-What are the economic strategies and practices built by indepent groups, labels, press to assure a visibility and practice to feminist or at least gender minded musical scene?
-How to produce a feminist song wihtout killing the ratings?
– Is there a connection to feminist history as a critique of the systems of representation, economy and access to technology of production and distribution?

Artist and curator. Works as a curator for the Office for Contemporary Art Norway/International Studio Programme Oslo.
Lectures, texts, radio programmes, installations on (electronic) music and women representation. She produced the audio-(fan)zine “XX01†for the exhibition First Story – Women Building/New Narratives For The 21st Century in Porto/Portugal in 2001. Based on this audio-zine she developed the installation “XX01/2003†at Centre d’Art Santa Mònica, Barcelona/Spain in 2003. Together with Sonja Eismann she did the text and installation “Re-Punk Electronic Music!“ as one part of the hub Sonic Scapes at the 3rd berlin biennial for contemporary art, February-April 2004, in Berlin/Germany. Christiane Erharter was born 1974 in Austria. She studied art and art theory at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna/Austria. Took a post-graduate course in Critical Studies at the Malmö Art Academy/Lund University in Malmö/Sweden.

Barcelona lesbian group of DJs that has managed to fill a gap in the women’s scene. Set up in spring 2002 in a small place called 3D in the Grà cia district of Barcelona, it has taken over from the veteran girls of the Fes-lu group that had been organising parties for over 10 years. +nurse+’s tonal weaving cannot be separated from her textile craftsmanship. Mixer and silk-screen printer, this nurse thinks as much as she bandages, questions as much as she appeases. Musicotherapy and poultice. On cotton or nylon background, she recycles motifs, superimposes images – layer after layer – to the very limit of legibility. On vinyl background, her tonal vanilla slices bang genres together, cover tracks and play dialectic between feathers and lead, between pink and black. In both mediums +nurse+ handles materials with highly inflammable symbolism: printed slogans vs. ill-treated national anthems.

MARÃA RUIDO
Artist, writer and cultural producer, since 1995 she has been working on projects concerned with the social development of the body and identity/identities, the imaginary of women in relation to work, and ways of constructing the collective and personal memory, basically through video and writing.

The Film shows different portraits of female musicians, working in the kontext of contemporary electronic music, i.e. HANIN ELIAS, SACHIKO M, PEOPLE LIKE US, MARINA ROSENFELD, KAFFE MATTHEWS and KEVIN BLECHDOM. The interviews center around questions of music production, which instruments are used by the musicians and what experiences they have made, producing the music. Only then, question about gender-roles are brought into the film.Why are there so few female musicians? What about the idea of a gender neutral machine music? “Re-Punk Electronic Music!â€
For some time, it has been predominantly women who, with decidedly performative approaches, have provided the most interesting stimuli in electronic music and who have deconstructed gender clichés. Nearly all of these projects have in common considerations of how electronic music can be presented differently, as well as references to the aesthetic of punk and its disrespectful practice of do-it-yourself, which replies to “Are we allowed to do that?†with “Everything is possible!â€
These women’s contributions can be read as a chapter of music history in which female musicians have, since the 1970s – from punk, through the Riot Grrrl movement, up to the present – made use of deconstruction, subversion and affirmation as strategies to turn gender relations in music upside down, to work on an alternative to male-dominated guitar and computer music and to write their own (feminist) history.
“Re-Punk Electronic Music!†contextualizes the activities of individual artists and shows the continuity existing between contemporary work and that of the late 1970s. It presents an archive of female strategies of representation in music, information and entertainment.
* “Re-Punk Electronic Music!“ is the title of the text and installation Sonja Eismann and I did together as one part of the hub Sonic Scapes at the 3rd berlin biennial for contemporary art, February-April 2004, in Berlin/Germany. In my lecture I will talk about this installation and present musical and visual examples.

– short introduction of your work from feminist point of view, by the way what do you understand by feminism: how would you define your work in relationship to gender and/or feminist issues? do you think this question is relevant? yes why? no? why?
-do you think sexual and or content discrimination is still in place in festivals, reviews, publishers, producers, distributors, if no, could you give us examples? if yes what would be your recommendations to fight against these discriminations? what is your own experience and practice? far from victimization discourses, could you say that there is also a factor of pleasure and empowerment playing with sexual identities and lyrics? how do you brand, trade them? any advice?
-could define the specific strategies you are using to, at the same time, resist and work with/in (quite successfully ) the normative cultural demands of society and the entertainment/media-arts marketplace? Is being your own producers and creating your own label part of these strategies? if yes, why? if no why? could define how do you work in terms of decisions in the group, the label? in terms of contracts, relationships, decisions with music publishers, distributors?
